Morocco. Hitch hike. April. For charity.

Yes. That's right.

This April, I will be hitch hiking to Morocco, with two other lovely lasses, Chinnie and Yen.

In doing so, we will be raising funds for Link Community Development, a UK charity working in a few African countries improving education for children there.

I believe that the work done by Link is an essential component of the massive effort to make poverty history.

Education is a basic human right. Education also plays an important role in lifting people out of poverty. Unfortunately, in some parts of the world, this right has been denied to the children there. Generation after generation, this opportunity has been denied to these people, and this means that the chances of them remaining poor are high.

The provision of education helps those who want to help themselves. There is a Chinese proverb:

"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

How will this hitch hike go?

In theory, the hitch starts at Warwick University and ends at Morocco.

But since I'd already be there, I might as well spend the next few days (weeks?) there. After all, I've always wanted to see Northern Africa for myself. The deserts, bazaars, camels, palm trees!

From there, I would fly back to Britain.

I am planning to raise £600 on my part. This money goes to Link.

In addition to that, I will have to bear other expenses myself. Registration fees, insurance, a return flight.

And just in case you need to know:

• £10 could pay for a desk for a child who now studies on the floor.
• £25 could pay for education support workers to visit 5 schools. This ensures schools have the personal support they need to tackle problems both inside the classroom and out.
• £100 could train 10 teachers at an HIV / AIDS workshop. Education remains the most effective 'shield' that society has in the battle against HIV and AIDS.
• £250 sponsors an entire school for one year. Sponsorship helps fund much needed development grants. It also funds vital training and support for the sponsored school, and more besides! (click here for more information on our School Sponsorship Scheme)
• £500 could pay for 50 teachers to attend a literacy workshop. Literacy provides children with a sense of pride, competence, and ability to function more effectively in society.

How to give?

1. Make a donation direct to Link through my page at http://www.justgiving.com/roylim. Credit and debit cards accepted!
2. Write a cheque addressed to "Link Community Development" and then hand them over to me.
3. I will also be "shaking tins" once in a while. If you see me, you can pass me the spare change (or notes).
4. Chinnie, Yen and I will also be doing other silly things to raise money e.g. holding events.

Oh yes, if you are a UK tax payer, you can qualify for Gift Aid if you give using options 1 and 2. This would mean that Link would receive more than the every extra pound you donate would mean that Link.

Please, do not feel forced or compelled to give. I only want you to give if you understand the NEED and agree to the CAUSE . But yeah, if you're feeling generous (and can afford to be), then yeah, be generous!

Donating and supporting me in this hitch would mean a lot to me and the children who will be benefiting from Link's work.

1. Dye my hair red (ok you can't see it)
2. Eat about 1 tiny cupfull of clotted cream
3. Dress as a sheikh and make a fool of myself at Score!
